The story of Saint Valentine’s debut EP, Transjester—a title that symbolizes a journey of self-discovery and acceptance—continues to unfold with their third single, “Letter to a Friend.”
This track tells a deeper story of a different time in the songwriter’s life, nearly five years ago, having recorded the first voice notes in 2020. Saint Valentine often jokes on stage that “Letter to a Friend” was “written by a depressed, quarantined, closeted fourteen-year-old, and it sounds like it was written by a depressed, quarantined, closeted fourteen-year-old.”
“Letter to a Friend” was finished when Saint Valentine was fifteen, but was recently recorded in 2025 for their upcoming EP. This track is profoundly personal and served as a vital coping mechanism for a darker time. It’s a letter no one wants to read, Saint Valentine recounts, “It’s mostly me trying to explain to the world that if I woke up one morning and I was gone, these are all the reasons why.”
“It wasn’t meant to see the light of day, but when I turned eighteen and decided to pursue my lifelong dream of music, I knew this song was one I had to put out into the world.”
Saint Valentine’s music often resonates with the queer community, serving as a form of self-expression and inspiration to be true to oneself. Fans find solace in hearing these stories told through song and feeling a sense of belonging.
“Letter to a Friend” weeps with hushed vocals and somber violins, building to an unexpected guitar-led and drum-heavy outro that will leave you wanting more. The emotional semantics of this lyrical letter find comfort in the juxtaposition of looking into the future and becoming the person you long to be.
